Update: Resource Lists & Project Pricing

Research Resources

Raindrop.io is a bookmarking app that allows users to save, manage, and share various collections of bookmarks on any browser or device.

I use Raindrop.io for publicly sharing resources that I have found useful and/or interesting over the course of my career. There are also a couple of private collections for a specific project that I share only with colleagues from that project, for easy access to relevant resources.

The resources I selected to share publicly are freely available, and include things such as subject, language, & biographical dictionaries; thesauruses; directories; digital collections of documents, images, sound/video recordings; library catalogs; resource guides; and more.

While resources listed do not require subscription fees or institutional memberships, some may require the creation of a free account.

About the Tags

For the sake of manageability, tags are limited to document and resource type, broad geographic coverage, and responsible institution(s). Subject tags may be added at a later date, but many of the online archives and databases listed have a very wide scope.

The Documents tag serves as a catch-all for anything with text that is not a book or periodical, to separate it from Manuscripts, Images, or Photographs.

The Government tag is included, because although it could indicate a subject area, in this case it suggests a document type — official publications (books, reports, maps, data, etc.) authored or made available by either a national government body (eg. National Archives) or international government (eg. United Nations).

Other document types are also reflected in tags such as RareBooks, Maps, Photographs, Manuscripts, etc.

The Images tag indicates content that is born-digital, like captured webpages in the Internet Archive, as opposed to scanned photographs.

Indexing Services: Rates for 2024

Generally, the price of an index varies based on several factors, including book length and complexity, density of indexing—how many indexable topics appear on a page, whether there is one author or several, and whether or not it will be an embedded index. The space available for the index and the type of book (biography, trade or academic publication) will determine the length of the index, for example, whether it is 5% or 8% of the book’s length. Some types of books, such as biographies, tend to have longer indexes than other books.

Factors such as multiple-authored works, embedded indexing, time constraints, and density of the text will also be considered when calculating the price.

Most un-embedded, nonfiction books will fall in the range of $7.00-$12.50 per indexable page.

For scheduling a project, please allow at least two weeks to complete the index. Longer or more complicated books, or embedded indexes, may require more time for completion. Contact me about scheduling and to request a price estimate.

Please be sure to let me know of any deadlines, or if the index is to be embedded.
